Fat Freezing: What to Expect, How Many Sessions, and What It Will Not Do
Fat freezing is one of the most requested treatments at Skin Reform, and also one of the most misunderstood. People arrive expecting either a miracle or a gimmick, and it is neither. This is a plain account of what the treatment does, who it suits, what it feels like, and where its limits sit.
What fat freezing actually is
Fat freezing — its clinical name is cryolipolysis — uses controlled cooling to reduce a pocket of fat beneath the skin. The principle it rests on is that fat cells are more vulnerable to cold than the skin, nerves and blood vessels around them. Cooled to a specific temperature for a set period, fat cells are damaged in a way the surrounding tissue is not.
Those damaged cells are not removed during the session. They die off gradually and your body clears them through the lymphatic system over the following weeks. This is why results appear slowly rather than immediately, and why the treatment cannot be rushed.
An applicator is placed on the area, usually drawing the tissue gently into it, and held in position for the duration of the cycle. You remain awake and comfortable throughout. There is no anaesthetic, no needle and no incision.
Who it suits — and who it does not
Fat freezing is a body contouring treatment, not a weight loss treatment. This is the single most important thing to understand before booking, and the reason some people are disappointed by it.
It works on discrete, pinchable pockets of fat sitting directly beneath the skin — the kind that stay put regardless of diet and exercise. It does not act on visceral fat, the deeper fat surrounding the organs, and it will not change the number on your scale in any meaningful way.
You are likely a good candidate if
- You are close to your usual weight and reasonably stable there
- You have a defined pocket of fat you can pinch between your fingers
- That pocket has not responded to diet or training
- Your skin in the area still has reasonable tone and elasticity
- You are willing to wait two to three months to judge the result
It is likely the wrong treatment if
- You are looking to lose weight overall
- The concern is loose or sagging skin rather than fat — fat freezing does not tighten skin, and reducing volume beneath already-lax skin can make laxity more visible
- The concern is cellulite. Cellulite is a structural issue involving the fibrous bands beneath the skin, and it is treated differently
- Your weight fluctuates significantly — new fat can be stored in untreated areas
There are also medical contraindications. Certain cold-related conditions, including cryoglobulinaemia, cold agglutinin disease and paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria, rule the treatment out entirely. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, hernias in the treatment area and some circulatory conditions also need to be discussed. This is assessed properly at consultation, which is why we do not book a first fat freezing session without seeing you.
Does it hurt?
Most people describe it as strange rather than sore.
The first five to ten minutes are the most uncomfortable part. There is an intense cold sensation and a firm pulling or tugging feeling as the applicator draws the tissue in. Once the area goes numb — which it does fairly quickly — most clients read, work on their phones or doze for the rest of the cycle.
When the applicator comes off, the treated area is cold, firm and pale. A brief massage of the area follows, and this part is the most uncomfortable of the whole appointment for some people, though it lasts only a couple of minutes. Sensation returns over the following hours.
How many sessions will you need?
Most areas need three to six sessions, spaced roughly ten to twelve weeks apart.
A single session produces a visible reduction in the treated pocket for many people. Further sessions deepen that result. Sessions are spaced to allow the body time to clear the treated cells and for the result to settle, so it is not a treatment that can be stacked into a short window before an event.
The number you need depends on the size of the area, how much fat is present, and what you want to achieve. That is assessed at your consultation rather than guessed at over the phone.
When will you see results?
| Timeframe | What is happening |
|---|---|
| Days 1–7 | Redness, swelling, tenderness and numbness in the treated area. Nothing visible yet |
| Weeks 2–4 | Numbness fades. Some people notice early change; many notice nothing at this stage |
| Weeks 4–8 | The clearest period of visible change as treated cells are progressively cleared |
| Weeks 8–12 | The result settles. This is when the outcome is assessed and further sessions decided |
Photographs at consultation matter more than memory here. Change of this kind happens slowly enough that you stop noticing it on yourself, and the before-and-after comparison is often the only way to see clearly what has shifted.
Downtime and side effects
There is no downtime. People routinely return to work directly afterwards and train the same week.
Common and expected
- Redness, firmness and swelling in the treated area for a few days
- Numbness or altered sensation, which can persist for several weeks and resolves on its own
- Tenderness, bruising, tingling or a cramping sensation in the first week
- Occasional itching or a sensitive feeling in the area as sensation returns
Uncommon, and worth knowing about
Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia is a rare complication in which the treated area increases in firmness and size rather than reducing, typically appearing a few months after treatment. It is uncommon, it appears to occur more frequently in men, and it does not resolve on its own — it requires surgical correction. We raise it at consultation because informed consent means knowing the unlikely outcomes as well as the likely ones.
What fat freezing will not do
- It will not tighten loose skin
- It will not treat cellulite
- It will not reduce visceral fat or improve metabolic health
- It will not keep working if your weight rises significantly afterwards
- It will not deliver a surgical result. If you want the change a surgical procedure provides, this is not a substitute and we will say so
Aftercare
- Keep moving. Ordinary activity and light exercise support lymphatic clearance
- Drink water consistently
- Expect the area to feel odd for a few weeks. Numbness is normal and temporary
- Do not judge the result before eight weeks
- Maintain your weight. The treated cells are gone, but the remaining cells can still enlarge
Contact your clinic if pain worsens rather than settles after the first week, if the skin blisters, or if the area becomes firmer and larger rather than softer over the months that follow.
What it costs
Fat freezing at Skin Reform starts from R1,700 per session for two applicators. Larger areas may require more than two applicators in a single visit, and multi-session packages are available. Current pricing for every treatment is published on our price list — we do not quote by area sight unseen, because the honest answer depends on what we see at consultation.
Your consultation
Every fat freezing course at Skin Reform begins with a free consultation. We assess the area, check that fat freezing is genuinely the right treatment for what is bothering you, discuss your medical history, take baseline photographs and give you a realistic view of what to expect and how many sessions it will take.
If we think a different treatment will serve you better — or that no treatment will give you the result you are describing — we will tell you. That is a more useful conversation than a booking.
Common questions
Is fat freezing permanent?
The fat cells cleared after treatment do not return. However, the fat cells remaining in the area can still enlarge if you gain weight, so the result holds best alongside a stable weight.
Can I have more than one area treated in a session?
Often yes, depending on the areas and applicators required. This is planned at consultation.
Will it show on the scale?
No, and it is not meant to. This is a contouring treatment, and the change is in shape rather than weight.
How soon before an event should I book?
Allow at least twelve weeks, and preferably longer if more than one session is planned.
Which areas can be treated?
Commonly the stomach, love handles, inner thighs, upper arms and knees, depending on the applicators available.
Is it safe?
Cryolipolysis has a long clinical track record and a good safety profile when performed on suitable candidates by trained practitioners. That last part matters — most complications in this category come from poor candidate selection rather than the technology.
