Carbon Laser Peel or Chemical Peel: Which One Do You Actually Need?
People use the word “peel” to mean two quite different treatments, and that causes more confusion in this industry than almost anything else. One uses acid. The other uses carbon and a laser. They suit different skin, involve different recovery, and are not interchangeable.
At Skin Reform we offer the carbon laser peel — our Carbon Hollywood Facial. Here is the honest difference, so you can work out which one you were actually looking for.
The difference in one table
| Carbon laser peel | Acid chemical peel | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | A carbon solution is applied, settles into pores, then a laser targets the carbon — removing it along with dead cells, oil and debris | An acid solution loosens the bonds holding dead surface cells, which then lift away over several days |
| What it suits | Oily and congested skin, enlarged pores, dullness, uneven texture, mild acne | Pigmentation, sun damage, fine lines, textural concerns at varying depths |
| Downtime | Essentially none. Mild redness for an hour or two | One to ten days of flaking depending on depth |
| Result timing | Immediate glow, same day | Builds over the days following the peel |
| Sun risk after | Lower, though sunscreen still essential | Higher. Needs strict sun avoidance |
| Course | A series gives the best result | A series gives the best result |
The short version: if your concern is oiliness, pores, congestion or dullness and you cannot afford downtime, the carbon laser peel is almost certainly what you want. If your concern is pigmentation or sun damage, there are better options and we will point you to them.
What the carbon laser peel actually does
A layer of liquid carbon is applied to the face and left to settle. Carbon is drawn into the pores and binds to oil, dead cells and debris sitting there.
A laser is then passed over the skin. The laser is attracted to the carbon, and as it targets it the carbon is vaporised — taking what it has bound to with it. At the same time the heat delivered into the skin stimulates collagen and has an antibacterial effect, which is why it helps congested and breakout-prone skin.
It is often called the Hollywood facial for the obvious reason that it produces an immediate visible glow with no recovery period, which made it popular before events and on camera.
Who it suits
- Oily or combination skin
- Visibly enlarged pores, particularly across the nose and cheeks
- Congestion, blackheads and mild to moderate breakouts
- Dull, tired-looking skin that needs brightening
- Anyone who wants a visible result the same day with no downtime
- Anyone preparing for an event in the next week
Who it does not suit
- Very dry or sensitised skin — it may be too stripping
- Active, inflamed cystic acne. That needs a different approach first
- Anyone with an active cold sore or broken skin in the area
- Anyone with recent sunburn or a fresh tan
- During pregnancy, which should be discussed at consultation
What it feels like, and afterwards
- A warm, prickly or light snapping sensation as the laser passes. Most people find it comfortable
- Around thirty minutes, including preparation
- Mild redness or warmth for an hour or two afterwards. Makeup can usually be applied the same day
- Avoid heat, saunas, steam and heavy exercise for 24 hours
- Sunscreen daily afterwards is not optional, even though the sun risk is lower than with an acid peel. Freshly treated skin is still more vulnerable.
What it will not do
- It will not remove deep pigmentation or significant sun damage. That is laser or pigmentation-specific territory
- It will not tighten loose skin
- It will not clear severe or cystic acne on its own
- It will not remove acne scarring — texture improves, indented scarring does not
- It will not deliver a permanent result. Oil production and congestion return, which is why it is best as a maintained treatment
If you came here looking for an acid peel
Worth being straightforward about this
We do not offer acid chemical peels. What we have is the carbon laser peel described above, which overlaps with a superficial acid peel in what it treats and has considerably less downtime.
If your concern is pigmentation, sun damage or fine lines rather than oil and congestion, a peel of either kind may not be the best answer in any case. Fractional laser resurfacing and our pigmentation treatments address those more directly, and we would rather point you to the right thing than sell you the nearest thing.
That is what the consultation is for, and it is free.
How often
As a general guide a course of three to six treatments gives the best result, with maintenance every four to six weeks afterwards.
Cost
The Carbon Hollywood Facial at Skin Reform starts from R950 per session, with course pricing available. Full pricing is published on our price list.
Common questions
Will my skin actually peel?
No, not in the way an acid peel causes peeling. There is no flaking phase, which is the main reason people choose it.
Can I have it before an event?
Yes, and it is one of the better choices. Two to three days beforehand is ideal.
Is it safe on darker skin tones?
Yes.
How is it different from a HydraFacial?
A HydraFacial uses suction and serums to cleanse and hydrate. The carbon peel uses laser energy, so it reaches deeper and adds a collagen and antibacterial effect. We offer both, and which suits you depends on whether your skin needs hydrating or decongesting.
